Training Mate (Staten Island Ferry)

Reporting directly to the Senior Port Captain, or in his/her absence, the Senior Port Engineer and/or Assistant Commissioner of Ferry Operations, the Training Mate will provide effective familiarization training related to NYCDOT Ferry Division staff and other designated personnel.EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS:The Training Mate assists with vessel familiarization training for newly hired deckhands and mates and supports the development and implementation of a structured training program to ensure the safe and efficient operation of Staten Island Ferry vessels. The incumbent coordinates and oversees the familiarization of new and existing employees on pilothouse equipment, vessel controls, navigation and communication systems, emergency equipment, ground tackle, and all other related deck systems. Training is conducted and supervised in a variety of operational environments, including while vessels are underway, docked, and during shoreside instruction. The Training Mate contributes to the development, maintenance, and periodic revision of training and familiarization manuals and coordinates vessel tie-ups with Dock Office personnel while working with the Port Office to schedule vessel rotations necessary for training activities. The incumbent maintains a thorough understanding of emergency procedures applicable to the Staten Island Ferry fleet and demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of pilothouse equipment and vessel operational systems. The position requires flexibility in scheduling to accommodate training requirements, operational needs, and the performance of additional duties as assigned.REQUIREMENTS:MMC REQUIREMENT: Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) with endorsement and medical certificate must be maintained for the duration of employment. TWIC REQUIREMENT: At the time of appointment, candidates must possess a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA). A valid TWIC must be maintained for the duration of employment.MEDICAL/DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENTS: Medical guidelines established by the U.S. Coast Guard apply to the position of Mate. Candidates will therefore be required to undergo a medical examination prior to appointment and thereafter, pursuant to Coast Guard regulations. Candidates must also pass a drug screening to be appointed.
